We are a non profit making organisation dedicated to promoting comics and graphic novels as an important cultural art form. Taking place at a variety of venues across the city, our aim is to cater to both long-time comic book fans and those who have never picked up a graphic novel before! Thought Bubble will take place 18th - 21st November 2009 with a centre-piece one day convention on Saturday 20th.

Thought Bubble will include art and writing based workshops for young people and adults, panels and talks lead by industry professionals and a programme of sequential art related film screenings. The special one day convention includes an incredible line up of leading artists and writers, and over 200 tables selling comics and merchandise. The day will also feature portfolio viewings and competitions. This promises to be one of the best events of its kind in the UK, where you’ll be able to meet some of your favourite comic book creators and browse the huge selection of memorabilia on sale - brought to you by the biggest and best exhibitors and dealers from across the country.

Steampunk Magazine at the Asylum – the UK Steampunk Convivial

Posted By John Reppion on September 6th, 2009

From www.steampunkmagazine.com

Next weekend, steampunks in the UK will get the chance to attend The Asylum Steampunk Convivial, the first steampunk event of its kind in Great Britain.

The Asylum will be showcasing a number of upcoming UK steampunk bands including Trousseaux; Sunday Driver; The Men That Will Not Be Blamed for Nothing; and our good friends Ghostfire, who we recently interviewed for Issue #6. There will also be various other events going on, including snuff sampling, a belly dancing workshop, and a number of stores and stalls where you will be able to purchase wares including comics by SPM regular Dr Geof.

The organisers have been kind enough to loan us a table where we will be selling the very first copies of Steampunk Magazine to be printed here in the UK, so come along to see us for a chat, and pick yourself up a copy!

Sadly, we can’t make it. :(

SteamPunk Magazine at Maker Faire California this weekend

Posted By John Reppion on May 27th, 2009

SteamPunk Magazine logo

From www.steampunkmagazine.com/inside/:

We wanted to let everyone know that Libby will be representing Steampunk Magazine at this weekend’s MAKE Magazine Maker Faire (San Mateo, California), which is the largest DIY festival worldwide.

We will be one aspect of Carnival Mechanique, which is an enlarged version of last year’s Steampunk Contraptor’s Lounge. We won an award at the 2008 faire for this area, and received attention in an issue of MAKE Magazine earlier this year. Libby has previously covered a bit of the Maker Faire experience as part of her interview with the Chronabelle folks in Issue #5.

SPM will be joined by many of our extended family members: Jake von Slatt, Datamancer, Deshret Dance Company, Suzanne Forbes, David S. Dowling, members of the Etsy Steam Team, and more.

Libby will have print copies of Issue #5 available for barter or purchase. If you will be in attendance, please come say hi, brainstorm, dance with Nathaniel Johnstone’s band of wayward musicians, have a snack with us, etc.

Bristol International Comic Expo 2009 – May 9th & 10th (UPDATED)

Posted By John Reppion on May 7th, 2009

A special One-Off Convention for 2009 hosted Exclusively at the
RAMADA PLAZA HOTEL

9th-10th May

http://www.fantasyevents.org/index2.html

The 2009 Bristol Comics Expo is coming up this weekend. We can’t attend this year because the event clashes with a family wedding (again)  but we urge everyone with an interest in comics to get down if they can.

The con is more intimate than usual this year, taking place in a different venue,  and there is a second Small Press Expo running simultaneously which should be very interesting. All the usual suspects will be in attendance and I’m sure a fantastic time will be had by all.

If you go we want to see pictures.

UPDATE: The lovely Cheryl Morgan will be Live Blogging the con via http://www.cheryl-morgan.com/?page_id=4836

It’ll be just like being there but the drinks will be cheaper.
